Thomas Frederick Jelen, known affectionately as Tom to friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2024, in his hometown of Milwaukee, at the age of 76. A kind-hearted soul, Tom's generosity and gentle demeanor touched the lives of all who knew him.
Born on November 21, 1947, in Milwaukee, Tom was a proud graduate of Pulaski High School, class of 1965. His early dedication to his studies and community set the stage for a life marked by commitment and service. Following high school, Tom answered the call of duty and served his country in the United States Army. Tom served first with the 97th Engineer Battalion (Construction) Stateside at Fort Riley, Kansas, and later in Vietnam with the 577th Engineer Battalion Vietnam Headquarters Company. A period of his life that instilled in him a profound sense of responsibility and honor.
After his military service, Tom returned to Milwaukee, where he was a member and Past Post Commander of Stoddard-Heinle American Legion Post 500 for over 50 years until it disbanded. He then became a member of Hales Corners American Legion Post 299 until his passing. Tom embarked on a fulfilling career as a manual drafter and later as a computer drafter. His meticulous attention to detail and his ability to adapt to the evolving landscape of technology made him a valued colleague. Tom also served his community for several years as a volunteer Police officer for the city of West Allis.
Tom's personal life was enriched by his loving marriage to Barbara, his partner and best friend for 38 years. Together, they navigated the joys and challenges of life, always supporting one another with unwavering devotion. Tom also cherished his family deeply, including his brother Frank and his wife Nancy, his brother-in-law Robert and his wife Irina, and the joyous company of his niece, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Each family gathering was brightened by Tom's presence, his stories, and his infectious laughter.
Beyond his family and career, Tom was a cornerstone of his community, always ready to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement. His kindness was a beacon that drew people to him, and his generosity knew no bounds. Whether it was helping a neighbor or volunteering for a local cause, Tom lived by the principle that to give was to receive.
Tom's gentle spirit and his capacity for kindness have left an indelible mark on this world. He navigated life's challenges with grace and emerged with a wisdom that he shared generously. His legacy is one of love, service, and compassion—a testament to a life well lived.
As we bid farewell to Tom, we celebrate a life that exemplified the best of humanity. He was a beacon of gentleness in a tumultuous world, a kind and generous soul who made a difference in the lives of many. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
