Sylvia Ann Kotowski, a beacon of love and devotion, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on May 31, 1932, in Milwaukee, she lived a life characterized by deep family bonds, unwavering faith, and an enduring zest for life.
Sylvia's story began in the heart of Milwaukee where she blossomed into a kindhearted and spirited young woman. A proud graduate of South Division High School in 1950, Sylvia's early working years were spent at South Side Sausage, a place where she not only honed her professional skills but also, at the tender age of 16, captured the heart of her future husband, Gene, when she accepted his job application. Their love story was one for the ages, spanning nearly 71 years of marriage, filled with laughter, dance, and an unbreakable partnership.
After her time at South Side Sausage, Sylvia dedicated her working days to Allen Bradley, where she was known for her diligence and warmth. Subsequently, she embraced the roles of wife, mother, and grandmother with every ounce of her being, creating a home filled with joy and unwavering support.
Sylvia's commitment to service shone brightly through her volunteer work. She offered spiritual solace by bringing first Friday communion to the homebound, supported the healing journeys of many at St. Luke's Hospital through her volunteer ministry, and nurtured the faith of young minds with her involvement in Children's Masses.
Family was Sylvia's pride and joy. She is survived by her devoted husband, Gene; their loving children, Jimmy Kotowski, Connie (Alan) Bednarski, Kathy (Bryan) Hoppe, and Bob (Tammi) Kotowski; cherished grandchildren, Joe (Bridgette) DeVore, Chris DeVore, Taylor (Jake) Simonovich, Casey (Nate) Vander Bleek, Lexi (Bartosz) Karaban; and the light of her later years, great-grandson Caden Simonovich. Sylvia’s warmth will be missed by her sisters, Irene (the late Harry) Treder and Sophie Veker, brother-in-law Thomas Kotowski, and Sisters-in-law Bernadine (Jim) McGivern and Adele Soyka. The family matriarch, she also leaves behind a legacy of love among her numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sylvia’s passions extended beyond her family and faith. She treasured the moments spent dancing with Gene and their close-knit group of friends. Bowling nights were also a highlight. She was the biggest fan of her grandchildren, watching them grow, supporting their interest, and attending events that they participated in. Her love for them was enduring. When not surrounded by the laughter of her family, Sylvia could be found immersed in a game of solitaire or searching for words in a puzzle.
Described by those who knew her as loving, selfless, and faith-filled, Sylvia's presence was a gift to all. Her nurturing spirit, gentle guidance, and selfless nature made her the cornerstone of her family. She led by example, showing how a life of service, coupled with unwavering love, creates a legacy that endures.
As we bid farewell to Sylvia Ann Kotowski, we reflect on a life well-lived, a journey marked by devotion, kindness, and an ever-present smile that could light up the darkest of rooms. Her memory will forever be cherished and her lessons of love and compassion will continue to guide us. Sylvia's life was a testament to the beauty that can be woven through the years by hands guided through faith and a heart filled with love.
Often, when I'm all alone
and can daydream for awhile,
I think of the love that God gave me
I remember ... and I smile.
I think of the day I met you,
how I liked you from the start.
How your smiling eyes and easy laugh
reached out and touched my heart.
I remember all the times we laughed
and also the times we cried.
But happy or sad ... good or bad
we faced them-- side by side.
That's what it's all about, you know
the loving ... the touching ... the caring,
the joy and sadness ... laughter and tears
the winning and losing ... the sharing.
I don't know what tomorrow may bring;
we're not allowed to see,
But I know I can face it unafraid
because you'll be there with me.
