Richard “Dick” John Sobczak was called to his heavenly home Monday, December 11, 2023 at the age of 87 years old. Dick was born May 10, 1936 in Burlington, Wisconsin to John and Edna (nee Haas) Sobczak. He lived in Waterford a short period of time and attended St. Thomas Aquinas school early on until the family moved to the farm on Denoon Road. Dick adapted well to the farm life recalling cutting the fields with a five foot sickle mower and horses, and caring for cows and other farm animals. He fondly recollected early farm stories that he shared with his children and grandchildren.
He continued to be educated at Lake Denoon school where he walked a couple miles to school each day. He went on to attend Racine County School of Agriculture and Domestic Economy until graduation in 1954. Studying Electrical Technology at Milwaukee Institute of Technology he graduated in June 1958. Because he was at the top level of his class he was recruited to work at Boeing Airlines in Seattle, Washington. He was also a member in the Air National Guard.
After a year he returned to Wisconsin to marry Marlene Esther Wegner on July 23, 1960, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Tess Corners, WI. With the help of family members, Dick built their lifelong home on a piece of farm land he grew up on Denoon Road.
As a married couple, Dick and Marlene played sheepshead with their monthly card club made up of their longtime friends. Dick thoroughly enjoyed polka dancing, and traveling all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean with their close friends and relatives. They spent many vacations with their dear friends, Allan and Sharon.
Dick was an avid gardener and would generously share his abundance of vegetables with family and friends. He was always seen in his garden and shared the love of planting and agriculture with his children and grandchildren.
As a young child he developed a passion for aviation. He started building model airplanes and continued that hobby into retirement. Dick would fly his remote-control planes he built on the farm fields where he grew up. He religiously would plan his schedule around the EAA convention in Oshkosh each year, attending by himself, or with family and friends spending days and days there watching the airshows or looking at all the aircraft. He had his private pilot license and took family members up in a plane from time to time.
He was an extremely hard worker going from farm chores to his full-time job at AC Spark Plug/General Motors/Delphi for many years. He finished his 37 year career with that company as a Quality Control Inspector.
Richard J. Sobczak was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years just 31 days prior. He is survived by two children, Cheryl (David) Weise and Scott Sobczak; seven grandchildren, Sarah (Brett) Lawrence, Robert Seamars, Austin (Desi) Sobczak, Victoria (Evan) Scofield, Joshua Seamars, Trenton (Tara) Sobczak, Travis (Fiancé Brittany) Sobczak ; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Sandra (Robert) Czubek; a brother-in-law, Wes (Ruth Ann) Wegner; and a niece, Susan Czubek, nephews, Jim (Kory) Czubek, and Steven Czubek, and other family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to caregiver Kathi Boziel. Thanks to the nurses and staff at ProHealth Care Home Hospice for all their help, care, and compassion. Special acknowledgement to Robert & Joshua Seamars, for years of help provided to allow Dick to remain home until the time of his passing.
