Norman Edward Schuman, known to friends and family as Norm, passed away peacefully in South Milwaukee, WI. June 27, 2023, surrounded by his children. Born January 15, 1934, in Independence, IA, Norm lived a full and vibrant life, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew and loved him. Norm was a devout Christian. His love of his Lord Jesus Christ was evident in how he raised his family.
Norm's early years, in Independence, laid the foundation for his lifelong love of learning and personal growth. Norm was a First Lieutenant in the Army ROTC. He went on to earn an electrical engineering degree from Iowa State University, a testament to his dedication, intelligence, and perseverance. In his professional life, Norm was a trailblazer. In his early career at Delco Electronics, he helped develop the electrical circuit boards used in several Apollo space crafts, including ones that went to the moon. This groundbreaking work not only advanced the field of engineering, but played a crucial role in the success of the Apollo missions. Norm later continued his engineering career, making significant contributions to various projects and initiatives. As Albert Einstein once said, "Only those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible." Norm truly embodied this spirit, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in his field.
Norm's personal interests were as varied as his professional accomplishments. He loved old classic movies, with "The Sound of Music" holding a special place in his heart. He was also an avid ballroom dancer. Norm found joy in small building projects at his home, initially in Greendale and later in Franklin, WI. These projects not only showcased his creativity and skill, but also provided him with a sense of accomplishment and pride. One of Norm's most cherished hobbies was tending to his yard and beautiful flower gardens, affectionately referred to as his "posies". These gardens were a testament to his patience, dedication, and love of nature. They brought joy and beauty to all who had the pleasure of experiencing them.
Norm's greatest joy in life, however, was his family. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Chester and Faye Schuman and his brothers, Louie and Jerry Schuman. Norm is survived by his brother Kenneth Schuman; his four loving, devoted children, Deborah (Lawrence) Menchak, David (Carrie) Schuman, Teresa Handley, and Susan Schuman; 11 grandchildren, Sarah (Tyler) Olsen, Jacob, Rachel, and Rebekah Menchak, Courtney (Andrew) Yenter, Tyler Schuman, Lauren Handley, Christopher (Monty) Medeiros, Trisha (Peter) Meriot, Danae (Brandon) Stand, and Lindsey Barone; and five great-grandchildren, Natalia and Dominic Olsen, Aiden and Gwenivere Yenter, and Braelynn Stand.
Later in life, Norm remarried and is also survived by his wife, Diane Schuman; her 2 children, Kristina Carroll and Elizabeth (Louie) Hondros; 6 grandchildren, Tiffany (Seth) Rasmussen, Andrew, and Evan Carroll; and 1 great-grandchild, Delaney Rasmussen.
Norm's love for his family was unwavering, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Norm's life was a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and love. His contributions to the field of engineering and his unwavering dedication to his family and friends will not be forgotten. As poet Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Norm's legacy of love and kindness will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created with those who knew him. Rest in peace, Norman Edward Schuman. You will be missed, and your memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those who loved you.
