Norbert A. Zajackowski

Zajackowski, Norbert A. Age 96, July 31, 2016. Beloved husband of the late Lucille (nee Tomczyk). Loving father of Marnie Twombly, Michael, Gregory (Robin) and the late Judith Zajackowski, and Carol (John) Box. Dear grandfather of Cassandra, Robert (Kari), Daniel, James, and Gary Zajackowski and Claire and Elizabeth Box. Further survived by sister-in-law Mary Jean, a few cousins, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Also preceded in death by his very special friend of 17 years Jean Stack. Norb was well-known and loved in his childhood neighborhood of 9th Place and Manitoba as the long-time owner of Norb's IGA, and subsequently a manager of Sentry Foods. He was a proud US Navy Veteran of WWII, serving for 6 years and rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Much of that time was spent on the USS Enterprise which participated in nearly every major battle in the Pacific. He was honored this past June at the Great Lakes Naval Museum on the anniversary of the Battle of Midway. Norb attributed his longevity to running, first as the "messenger" and delivery boy for his father's grocery store, then as a track and cross country star at Boy's Technical High School. Many people played key roles in supporting Norb's health in his later years: Dr. Steven Merry and staff of the Falls Medical Group, Mary Mayr, staff at Three Crowns Park in Evanston, IL and caregivers Rey, Roger and Zia. Steve Hoffman, with his extensive interest and knowledge of Naval history, visited weekly, keeping Norb mentally engaged. Visitation Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 3222 South 29th Street, Milwaukee, WI at 4pm followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Three Crowns Park Scholarship Fund and St. Vincent de Paul Society of Milwaukee County appreciated.
