Mona Lee Karpowitz, née Kirby, a cherished artist, loving mother, and adored grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024, in Greendale, Wisconsin, at the age of 88. Born on June 23, 1935, in Wayside, Wisconsin, Mona's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with passion, creativity, and the love of her family.
Mona's early years in Wayside were filled with the rural beauty that would later inspire much of her artwork. She met the love of her life, Ted Karpowitz, later in life, and they embarked on a journey of love and companionship that lasted until Ted's passing in 1998. Mona is survived by her four children Claudette Van Ert (Eric), Joseph Hackett (Silvia Srour), Chandra Parkhurst (Jim), and David Hackett. The family expanded over the years to include cherished grandchildren Matthew Sell (Jill Marzion), Daniel Sell (Angela), Theresa Craig (Anthony), Andrew Hackett (Allie), and Katie Giordano (Anthony), as well as the treasured great-grandchildren Gavyn, Easton, Sofia, Lily, Taylor, Ella, Cason, Nash, Breck, Georgia, Chloe, Makenna, and Joelle.
Mona's passion for art was evident throughout her life and career. She was a gifted artist whose works were celebrated and recognized by peers and the public alike. Her pastel piece titled "Goldie Two" won the Exposure Art & Photography Exhibition in 2005, and she followed this with another win in 2006 for her work "Salvus - Safe." Mona's art was more than a hobby; it was a means of connecting with the world and sharing her perspective with those around her.
Beyond her accomplishments in the art world, Mona had a diverse range of interests. She was an avid bird watcher, finding peace and joy in the simple pleasure of observing nature's avian wonders. Sewing was another of Mona's early talents, allowing her to craft beautiful garments and gifts for her loved ones. Family gatherings were particularly dear to Mona, as they brought together the people she cherished most. Her home was often filled with the laughter and stories of her extensive family, creating memories that they will hold close forever.
Mona's legacy is one of beauty, creativity, and love. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her art will continue to inspire and bring joy to those who encounter it. Her family will remember her as a guiding light—a woman who faced life's challenges with grace and embraced its joys with an open heart.
As the sun sets on Mona's life story, it is with deep love and immense gratitude that her family bids farewell to a remarkable woman. Mona Lee Karpowitz will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were touched by her warmth and creativity.
Mona's life was a testament to the beauty that can be created when one follows their passions and dedicates themselves to the people and things they love. Her journey may have come to an end, but the memories and legacy she leaves behind will continue to shine brightly for generations to come.
A Memorial Gathering with light snacks will be held at Max Sass Funeral Home, Mission Hills Chapel, on Saturday, June 29, 11am-1pm. Mona will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Ted privately at St Mary's Cemetery in Menomonee Falls. Memorial contributions in Mona’s name would be appreciated to Zilber Family Hospice.
