John Patrick Phelan, a beacon of generosity and friendliness, passed away peacefully at the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center on October 18, 2024, at the age of 75 in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Born on August 5, 1949, in the very same city, John's life was a testament to service, family, and the simple joys that make a life well-lived.
John was the beloved husband of Julie, with whom he shared a loving and devoted marriage of 52 years. Together, they raised a family that was his pride and joy: his children John Joseph, Laura, and Daniel (Christa). His role as 'Pa' to his grandchildren, Rheannan, John Michael, Braeden James, Marissa, and Teagan, was one he cherished with every ounce of his being. He was a brother who shared an unbreakable bond with Bonnee (the late Charles) Case, Ruth Ann (Terry) Barthel, Rachel (Kent) Pedersen, and Rebecca (Chris) Winter.
His dedication to his country was evident through his proud service as a Sgt. First Class in the United States Army. John's work ethic, leadership, and camaraderie were deeply appreciated by all who served alongside him. His commitment to his fellow servicemen and women continued long after his military career as he remained actively involved in various associations, lending his support and wisdom.
John's interests were a mirror to his character. His gardens were a labor of love, a testament to his patience and nurturing nature. He could often be found embarking on home improvement projects, where his handiness ensured that not only his home but also those of his friends and family were always in perfect condition. A collector at heart, John found joy in hunting down unique coins, brewery memorabilia, Star Wars collectibles, and Lego sets, each item holding a special place in his expansive array of treasures. His passion for genealogy allowed him to connect with his roots and share stories of the past with the younger generations.
Those who knew John would describe him as the epitome of generosity, always ready to lend a hand or an ear. His friendly demeanor was contagious, making him a well-loved figure in his community. "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give," a quote by Winston Churchill, was a principle John lived by, giving freely of his time, resources, and love.
John's legacy is one of warmth, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in the countless memories and the enduring impact he has left on the lives of those he touched. His spirit, a guiding light of generosity and friendship, will continue to inspire all who had the pleasure of knowing him. John Patrick Phelan will be deeply missed, yet his legacy will flourish in the hearts of his family and the many lives he enriched.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024, from 9 to 11 am with a service and military honors at 11 am at the Max A. Sass & Sons Mission Hills Chapel.
