Jeffrey M. O'Neill, known affectionately as Jeff, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 20, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on October 13, 1936, to mother Hildegard O’Neill, Jeff's life was marked by adventure, dedication, and the love of his family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Mary O'Neill, and their children, Tim O'Neill and the late Shawn (Sara) O'Neill. Jeff was a cherished grandfather to Shannon (Chris Johnson) O'Neill and Ryan (Megan Ruxton) O'Neill, and he was overjoyed to be a great-grandfather to Caiden Johnson. Jeff is also survived by his sister Patricia O’Neill, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, and was predeceased by his sister, the late Cecile Anderson. His legacy is carried on through his family, including Karen O'Neill, the mother of his grandchildren, who all held a special place in his heart.
Jeff's early years were spent in West Allis, where he graduated from West Allis Central High School in 1954. He then went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a pivotal time in his life, not only for his academic endeavors but also for meeting his beloved wife. It was here that he became a proud member of the Delta Sigma Kappa Fraternity, forming bonds and memories that would last a lifetime.
Professionally, Jeff dedicated 33 years of his career to serving the city of Milwaukee as a building inspector. His commitment to his work was unwavering, and he retired in 1996 with the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Jeff's work ethic and integrity left a lasting impact on the community he served.
Jeff's spirit of adventure was evident in his love for hiking and biking along rapid transit lines. He took 39 memorable travels by train, with the most remarkable being a trip around the perimeter of the United States. This journey encapsulated his adventurous spirit and love for exploration. Jeff was also an avid fan of jigsaw puzzles and doing crosswords, a pastime that reflected his patient and methodical approach to challenges. Jeff was also a member of SERA and would often be found reading TRAINS magazine.
Music from the big band era brought great joy to Jeff, and he could often be found singing along with Sinatra tunes. His love for music was infectious, and it provided a soundtrack to many family gatherings. Jeff also enjoyed swimming, a hobby that kept him active and spirited throughout his life.
Those who knew Jeff would describe him as adventurous, handy, and spirited. His adventurous nature was not just in his travels but also in his approach to life, always ready to explore new horizons. His handiness was a trait that made him the go-to person for family and friends whenever something needed fixing. Jeff's spirited personality was marked by an infectious enthusiasm for life's simple pleasures.
Jeff's life was one of purpose and joy. His presence was a gift to all who knew him, and his memory will be treasured forever. As we say goodbye to Jeff, we celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the immeasurable impact he had on those around him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Jeff's legacy of love, adventure, and kindness will continue to inspire and guide us.
Jeffrey M. O'Neill's life was a testament to living fully and loving deeply. He will be profoundly missed, but the memories he created will remain in the hearts of his loved ones forever.
