James F. Ottaway, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2023, in Greendale, Wisconsin, at the age of 77. Born on September 17, 1946, Jim's life was characterized by his loving nature, passionate spirit, and generous heart.
Jim was the beloved husband of Judy, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring marriage. He was a loving father, deeply admired and respected by his children, Chris (and spouse Jenni), Jackie (and spouse Johnny), and Jeff (and spouse Michele). His role as a grandpa was one of his greatest joys, and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren: Calvin, Andrew, Nathan, Jacob, Miranda, Reagan, Aiden, Dylan, and Jadon. Jim also leaves behind his dear sisters, Mary Ellen, Kathleen, and Elizabeth (and spouse Francis), as well as many nieces, nephews, and a close-knit circle of friends and relatives who will miss him dearly.
After graduating from Greendale High School, Jim spent 4 years in the US Army. He then devoted 30 years of his life to a fulfilling career at UPS. His dedication and hard work were evident to all who knew him. Retirement did not slow Jim down; he continued to contribute his skills and passion to Spellman Trailers for over two decades, where his presence was a source of inspiration and camaraderie.
Jim's love for sports was only matched by his love for gardening. He found peace and satisfaction in tending to his plants and watching them grow, a testament to his nurturing character. His affection for penguins was well-known, a quirky interest that brought smiles to many and reflected his playful and endearing personality.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as a man of great love and passion, always ready to give of himself and share his generous spirit. His presence was a comfort, his laughter a joy, and his guidance a steady hand in the lives of those he touched.
As we say farewell to Jim, we reflect on a life well-lived, marked by the love he gave and the legacy he leaves behind. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories told, the gardens nurtured, and the sports and volleyball knowledge he shared with family, especially with Judy.
His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him, and his lessons of love, passion, and generosity will continue to resonate with all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Jim's life was a beautiful journey that touched countless souls, and his memory will be treasured always.
Visitation will be held at Max A. Sass & Sons-Greenridge Chapel (4747 S. 60th Street, Greenfield, WI 53220) on Friday December 22nd starting at 4PM until time of service at 6PM.
