James "Jim" Keith Burnham, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and avid sports enthusiast, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024, in Greenfield, Wisconsin, at the age of 79. Born on April 20, 1944, in Janesville Wisconsin, Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and joyous moments spent with loved ones.
Jim's early years in Janesville were the foundation of a life lived with integrity and kindness. He graduated from Janesville High School in 1962, where he formed lifelong friendships. Shortly after graduation, Jim attended the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and then enlisted in the United States Army in 1964. His commitment to his nation was further demonstrated during his time spent on a troop carrier ship, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Bremerhaven, Germany, as one of the last soldiers to travel by ship for general service.
Stationed in Germany for two and a half years, Jim's service included memorable experiences, such as visiting the Berlin Wall and exploring Barcelona, Spain. He was honorably discharged on August 21, 1967, as a Specialist 5, carrying the pride of his service and the skills he gained into his civilian life. Returning home, Jim moved to Milwaukee, WI to work for Miller Brewing Company.
Jim’s heart found its match in Patricia M. Kuschewski, while both working for Miller Brewing Company. Their nearly 54-year marriage was a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised three daughters: Sharon (Dirk) Burnham Stanley, Diane Burnham, and Elizabeth (Eric) Johnson, instilling in them the values of family, hard work, and compassion. Jim's joy was multiplied in 2023 with the birth of his grandson, Jack James Dennis Johnson, with whom he shared his love for play and adventure. He witnessed Jack’s first steps just days before his passing.
He was a dedicated fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Green Bay Packers, often found cheering on his teams with the same enthusiasm he brought to every aspect of his life. His competitive spirit shone through in his enjoyment of Dart Ball, and cherished memories were made hunting small game with his father and their dogs, as well as fishing in Wisconsin's serene outdoors. He enjoyed hosting the annual backyard 4th of July family picnic, weekend card clubs with friends and attending a variety of musical performances at the Fireside Theater. Throughout his life, Jim worked for many local companies such as Evinrude Motors, Printworks, Briggs & Stratton, and then retiring in 2009 from Franciscan Villa where he brought joy and laughter to many senior residents.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as a loving, thoughtful provider and spirited protector. He was a man who lived his life with a warm smile, a generous heart, and a twinkle in his eye that spoke to the playful spirit within. Jim's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Patricia; his loving daughters and sons-in-law; his adored grandson; his sisters, Barbara (the late Richard) Dubois and Marcia (Paul) Humbert; lifelong best friend Richard (Mary Ann) Magee, and many other relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends who were all touched by his gentle presence.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Spencer and Stella Burnham, who set the example of love and family that he followed throughout his life as members of the First Presbyterian Church in Janesville, WI. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit remains an indelible part of the lives he touched.
As we bid farewell to James "Jim" Keith Burnham, we celebrate a life well-lived, a duty well-served, and a love well-shared. His story is one of unwavering commitment, joy in the simple pleasures of life, and the quiet strength that underpins a life of purpose and affection. Jim will be dearly missed, but his memory will forever be a beacon of love and resilience for his family and all who knew him.
