James H. Hickman Jr., affectionately known as Jim to his friends and loved ones, lived a life that was as rich and vibrant as the tapestries he so loved to create. Born on January 31, 1948, in the heart of Wisconsin, Jim's journey through life was one marked by courage, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to those he held dear. His final chapter came to a peaceful close on March 7, 2025, in Mt. Pleasant, WI, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.
Jim's early years in Wisconsin shaped the man he would become – a testament to the resilience and strength of character that would define him. His service in the US Army during the Vietnam era exemplified his bravery and commitment to a cause greater than himself. Upon returning home, Jim channeled his precision and discipline into a successful career as a machinist at Harnishfeger. Yet, it was his passion for the culinary arts that truly captured his heart, leading him to culinary school where he honed his skills to become not just a chef but an artist.
His talents in the kitchen were legendary, especially his ability to create elaborate wedding cakes that were not only a feast for the palate but a spectacle for the eyes. As a caterer, he brought joy to countless celebrations, and his artistry didn't stop at the oven door. Jim was an artist in the truest sense, drawing, painting, and even sculpting ice into ephemeral masterpieces that reflected the beauty of the world as he saw it. When he wasn't in the kitchen, Jim could often be found on the open road as an over-the-road truck driver, where he found solace and freedom in the solitude of the journey.
Jim's interests were as diverse as his talents. From fishing in the quiet serenity of nature to working with his hands in woodworking, he found peace and fulfillment. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, a bowler with a competitive streak, and a sports fan who, rooting for the Brewers baseball team, eventually became a fervent Packers supporter, inspired by his late son, Mike. He also enjoyed watching Doctor Who, Star Trek, and of course, cooking shows. Jim's home was always a hub of activity and warmth, earning him the affectionate title of 'neighborhood dad' and 'baby whisperer' for his gentle way with the little ones.
Behind every great man is a family that both grounds and elevates him. Jim was a loving father to Christine (the late Eric) Mlodzik, Joseph Hickman, and the late Michael Hickman. He found joy and pride in his grandchildren: Joe Jr. (Tiffany), Ashton, Gavin, Jenna, Mike, and Malakai, and his great-granddaughter, Gia. His bond with his former spouse, Susan Likness, was one of mutual respect and shared memories.
Kindness was the thread that wove through every interaction Jim had. His loving nature was a beacon for those who knew him, and his creative spirit inspired all who encountered his work. Jim Hickman Jr. was a man who lived with passion, loved without reserve, and left a legacy of beauty and strength.
As we celebrate the life of Jim Hickman Jr., let us remember that each day presents an opportunity to craft our own masterpiece, to live with courage, and to love with all our heart. Jim's story is a reminder to embrace our talents, to find joy in our passions, and to be the kind of person who makes the world a better place simply by being in it. His life was a canvas of experiences, and he painted it with the vibrant colors of love, creativity, and kindness. Let us carry forward the brushstroke of his legacy, creating our own works of art in the lives we touch. Jim Hickman Jr., your spirit will continue to inspire and motivate us all.
