George R. Horrell

George Richard Horrell passed away peacefully on January 19, 2021, at the age of 88. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Grace (nee Rowe) Horrell. Loving father of Karen (Jeffrey) Jordan, Kathryn (David) Gableman, and Jim (Janet) Horrell. Proud grandfather of Sarah (Martin) Bushman, David (Heather) Jordan, Laura (Zachary) Sowle, Michael and Angela Gableman, and Matthew Horrell; dear great-grandpa of Caroline Bushman. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Culver; brothers, Robert (Carol) and David (Nora) Horrell; cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Adele (Richard) Horrell; father, George Robert Horrell; sister, Nancy Schleppenbach; and step-mother, Martha Horrell. George was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Throughout high school and his two years at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, George excelled in sports. He won varsity letters in track and basketball, and was a state champion in the pole vault in college. After transferring to the University of Missouri, George graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and started work at Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Company in West Allis, Wisconsin. Three months later, in 1955, George was drafted into the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. George trained soldiers to use Nike missiles and was a member of the Army volleyball team. Upon completing his service, George returned to Allis-Chalmers where he designed large induction motors. George married Grace and they raised three children in Greendale, Wisconsin. After Siemens acquired the Motor-Generator department from Allis-Chalmers, George and Grace were transferred to Florida for three years, and then to Norwood, Ohio, where George worked until his retirement in 1997. After retirement, George and Grace returned to Greendale to be closer to their family. George was an active member of Greendale Community Church, serving on several boards, ushering, and playing on the softball team. He enjoyed playing cribbage, watching his grandchildren participate in their numerous activities, and spending time at Moon Beach Camp.
