George Konkel

February 22, 1944 — December 28, 2023

George Konkel, a cherished soul known for his unwavering dedication to his family and community, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023, in Greenfield Wisconsin. Born on February 22, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. George’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, service, and the joys and simple pleasures of being a family man.

George was a proud native of Bay View, where he grew up surrounded by his family and friends. He carried the spirit of his hometown with him throughout his life and he was always eager to contribute to the community that shaped him. As a beloved father, George instilled in his children – George (Lauren), Geoffrey (Tiffany), and Royce – the importance of integrity and kindness. His role as grandpa was one he cherished deeply, Royce Jr., Hugo, Penelope, Milo, Cooper, and Addison were blessed by all the wisdom and affection George could afford. His former spouse Susan shared many treasured memories with George. He had a strong connection with her family. George’s siblings, John (Nancy), Carol, and the late Darlene “Mickey”, knew him as a steadfast brother and family man. His role as godfather to Debra Larson, Katie Porter and the late Diana Fickau were a source of great pride. There are many lifelong friends he leaves behind and those he has greatly missed he now will rejoin.

Professionally, George was a proud Teamster, taking to the open road as a long-haul truck driver for much of his life. His work was not a job but a calling, as he followed in his own father Harry’s footsteps. He had a passion for driving. In retirement he remained active, again taking to the road for Aurora Health Care, transferring laboratory specimens from hospitals and clinics. George continued to find purpose delivering for Meals on Wheels. He spent countless hours volunteering and was considered a “National Treasure” of Curative Care Inc., as he assisted in a local senior day program. He regularly donated blood. It was in these ways George maintained that bond with his community and upheld the principals upon which he was raised.

Socially, George’s love for his hometown was evident in his support of its sports teams. It was more than a pastime; it reflected his commitment to his roots and the community he held dear. He could often be found at his children’s and grandchildren’s endeavors supporting them with the same enthusiasm he brought to every aspect of his life. George was an avid reader and enjoyed a good jigsaw puzzle. He really enjoyed playing cards with his friends and was especially fond of poker. He was intelligent, quick-witted and had a great sense of humor. All who knew George regarded him as a gentle man with a big heart. George was the type of guy that made an impression, and he was loved by many.
