Ernest C. Johnson, known as Ernie to his friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 10, 2024, in Milwaukee, WI. Born on September 27, 1927, in Stoughton, WI, Ernie lived a vibrant and full life over his 96 years.
Ernie's journey began in Stoughton, WI where he was raised, graduating from Stoughton High School in 1945. He studied accounting at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He then proudly served his country for 4 years in the Navy. Ernie dedicated over 25 years of service as the Comptroller of Northwestern National Reinsurance Corporation in Milwaukee. He became a pioneer in computer programming, developing systems that not only benefited Northwestern National but also became a benchmark for other insurance companies.
He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Elaine Johnson, during their 66 years of marriage. Together, they raised two sons, Dale Johnson (wife Donna), and Gary Johnson (wife Kathryn). Ernie's role as a father was one he cherished deeply, and supported many activities of his sons including Boy Scouts, sports, and music.
Ernie's legacy includes four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also held a special bond with his surviving sisters, Margaret (Johnson) Wersland and Elaine (Johnson) Paton. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Johnson.
Retirement brought a new chapter for Ernie as he and Elaine moved to Tucson, AZ. There, they engaged in competitive tennis, earning national recognition in senior singles and couples tournaments. Ernie also enjoyed golfing, biking, square dancing and traveling throughout the country. After enjoying about 15 years in the warmth of Tucson, Ernie and Elaine moved to Winter Haven, FL, where they continued to enjoy their active lifestyle.
In his later years, Ernie returned to Milwaukee to be closer to his family. He always looked forward to regular family gatherings with his siblings. His 95th birthday was celebrated with a family reunion attended by all of Ernie’s siblings, children, nieces and nephews. Ernie leaves behind a family who will continue to honor his memory and his love of family.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
