Young, Erin Rachel (nee Wengerd) The final chapter of Erin Rachel Young's (nee Wengerd) life concluded on Sunday, June 14, 2015. She was born May 8, 1977. Erin is the daughter of Carol and Eugene Wengerd of Salisbury, PA. She is the granddaughter of Al and Kate Hinger and Allen and Alta Wengerd. Erin is survived by her husband of 14 years, David E. Young of Muskego, WI., her parents, her brother Seth Wengerd of Boalsburg, PA and her grandmother Kate Hinger of Maryville, TN. She is also survived by her special 4-legged companion, Maggie. She was a 1995 Graduate of Salisbury-Elk Lick High School and a 1999 graduate of Penn State University. Erin graduated with highest distinction and honors in Journalism. While in college, she was editor for La Vie Yearbook and interviewed Joe Paterno among others. After graduation, she was a reporter for The Centre Daily Times of State College, PA and The Middletown Transcript of Northern Delaware. She was also the Coordinator of Public Relations at Cecil Community College. Most recently, Erin was the Chief Content Strategist for educators rising within Phi Delta Kappa. She was also the editor of two educational magazines: Go Teach and Educational Horizons. For those magazines, she received awards from Associated Media and Publishing and APEX. Erin was a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, all Penn State Sports and especially the Milwaukee Brewers and team mascot, Bernie Brewer. Her real passion was caring for shelter animals while they waited for their "Forever Homes". She volunteered at Elmbrook Humane Society where she was an emerging leader and enjoyed working wagfast and lure coursing. Along with adopting rescue dogs, she fostered dogs and did transport of animals for the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission. In this capacity, she transported not only cats and dogs, but also snakes and lizards. When questioned about that, her reply was, "even reptiles deserve forever homes". She was a regional coordinator for National Novel Writing Month. She enjoyed writing and recently completed a novel for which she had started the process of looking for a publisher. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged and appreciated to Elmbrook Humane Society (www.ebhs.org), TRIO Animal Foundation (www.trioanimalfoundation.org) or to MADACC.org. A second Memorial Gathering will take place on Thursday, July 2 from 2-4PM & 7-9PM at Newman Funeral Homes in Grantsville, MD. A Memorial Mass will take place on Friday, July 3 at 11AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church.
