Elizabeth L. Gies (age 85), born November 1, 1935, passed peacefully on January 14, 2021 in Oak Creek, Wisconsin with family by her side. Preceded in death by her husband of nearly 20 years, Roy, sister Patricia Rowe, and brother Charles (Nancy) Nye. She is survived by her sister Virginia (George) Cunningham; children Laurie Brown (Robert Kratz), Brian Stipe, and Christopher (Pauline) Stipe; step-children Susan Gies Conley and Allen Gies; grandchildren Megan Brown, Erin Brown, Krista Korpal, Craig Stipe, Logan Stipe, Madeline Conley, and Ethan Conley; along with in-laws and countless nieces and nephews. Betty, as she was known to most, waged a valiant war against breast cancer for 25 years – making friends and encouraging survivors along the way. In her own words, she “lived a pretty good life!” After retiring from the State of Michigan Treasury Department, she obtained her commercial driver’s license and drove a tour bus for Dean Trailways in Lansing, Michigan until Roy’s retirement. She and Roy were avid hunters, rode their motorcycles across the country well into their 70’s, snowmobiled throughout Michigan, and traveled the world. Their life together was a life of experiences, which they enjoyed immensely. The family would like to send their gratitude to Froedtert Hospital’s Oncology Department (Dr. Sailaja Kamaraju in particular), Caring Alternatives’ Creek Side Terrace memory care, and Allay Hospice for the unwavering care and compassion they showed Betty for the last several months. Services will be held at a later date in Michigan, once the health risks for gathering due to the COVID pandemic have subsided.
