Donald James “Don” Pulkkila, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 28, 2024, at the age of 80. Born in Bessemer Township, Michigan, on July 11, 1944, to Carl and Angeline Pulkkila, Don grew up in a bustling household that would eventually welcome a spirited array of siblings. His life was a testament to love, service, and the simple joys that make a life well-lived.
Don dedicated his career to the safety of others as a firefighter for the city of Milwaukee for 34 years. His bravery and commitment to his work were paralleled only by the love and devotion he showed to his family. Don’s wife, Shirley, was the cornerstone of his life, and together they created a legacy of love and laughter that will live on through their children: Angela (Bill) Burkard, Kristine (Jim) Foster, and the late James Pulkkila.
A loving grandfather, Don took great pride in his grandchildren, Jessica Foster, Jami (Jacob) Haas, Kathryn Foster, John Foster, Brittany Pulkkila, and Grace Pulkkila, and was overjoyed to become a great-grandfather to Emma. He shared with them his passions and imparted wisdom that will guide them through their own journeys.
Don was a man of many interests, embodying the spirit of adventure and a willingness to try anything once. His hobbies ranged from hunting and fishing to woodworking and the challenge of a good puzzle. He loved all sports including all WI teams, and never missed the chance to catch a game. Don was the kind of person who could fix anything, a handy and thoughtful man whose skills were always at the service of those he loved.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his siblings Bruce (Connie) Pulkkila, Carleen (Jeff) Dahlman, Sharon (Scott) Adkins, Sandra (Leo) Leal, Cathy (Rob) Ramirez, and Sue (Glenn) Rowan, and Sister-in-law Rachelle Ablah. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jim, and his siblings Barbara, Alan, Bonnie, and Diane, all of whom had a special place in his heart.
As we say goodbye to Donald James Pulkkila, we celebrate the remarkable life he led and the countless ways he enriched the lives of those around him. Don’s legacy is one of love and generosity, a man who approached life with a warm smile and a great sense of humor that never missed the chance to get a laugh. His thoughtful nature made him a pillar in the lives of many, and the memories he created with his loved ones will be treasured forever.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Tim, Davina, Jackie, Chloe, and the Staff at Accent Care Hospice for the exceptional care and support they have provided over the past few years.
A memorial service will be held to honor Don’s life, as we gather to share stories, laughter, and tears, remembering a man whose presence was a gift to us all. Don will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and kindness will forever remain a guiding light for his family and friends.
Rest in peace, Don. Your love lives on in the hearts of those you touched.
