David passed away peacefully on November 10th, 2024 at the Aurora Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, at the age of 96 years.
David was born and raised in Piqua, Ohio. He served in the Korean War, and after being honorably discharged, he attended college at the University of Maimi in Coral Gabels, FL. David then worked for the Social Security Administration where he spent his entire career. He eventually met his wife, Carolyn, who also worked there. They were married for 62 years, many of which they resided in Greendale, WI.
David loved music and was a huge fan of the big band era. He also loved to sing and was a longtime member, along with Carolyn, of his church choir at St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church in Greendale. He had a wonderful voice that will be missed.
David and Carolyn loved to travel and visited many areas across the United States and in Europe. Among his favorite trips was the annual family vacation to the Eagle River area in northern Wisconsin. Many incredible memories were created over several years of visiting this area. David and Carolyn also had a love for lighthouses and many of their vacations were spent visiting them across the country.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel (nee Dill) and Harry Birk, along with his brothers, Tom and J.Richard, his daughter Jennifer, and granddaughter Kaylen Birk. He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn, daughter Kathryn (Dennis) Tisch, and son Jonathan (Katherine). ‘Papa’ is further survived by his grandchildren Sydney and Jackson Tisch and Thomas Birk.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, November 16th at St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church (6101 S 51st St, Greendale, WI) from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. Memorials to St. Stephen the Martyr or to the North Point Lighthouse (2650 N. Wahl Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53211).
