In Loving Memory of Cletus Clement Campbell
Cletus Clement Campbell, 94, Muskego, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 27th while doing what he loved, watching the Green Bay Packers.
Cletus was a Navy and WWII veteran and he belonged to the Park Falls Wisconsin American Legion Post 182 and the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated coach and school teacher for over 40 years, primarily spent with the Department of Defense
Dependents Schools (DoDDS) System overseas in France, Germany and Japan.
Cletus was born on December 23rd, 1927, in Park Falls, WI to Joseph and Mary (Kundinger) Campbell, grew up there and graduated from Lincoln High School in Park Falls. Cletus played on both the high school football and basketball teams. Immediately following high school, Cletus joined the Navy and was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas and served at the end of WWII. Following his Honorable Discharge in 1948, Cletus attended the University of Wisconsin – Superior and graduated in 1952. Cletus was a member of the college football and basketball teams and was elected Homecoming King his senior year. Cletus met Cecelia Fitzgerald at UW-Superior, and they were married in Superior on December 27th, 1952. They were married for 56 years.Cletus’s years as a teacher and coach began in Ashland, Wisconsin and continued in Zion, Illinois. In 1957, Cletus became part of the DoDDS system and taught and coached at the high school in La Rochelle, France. In 1958, Cletus accepted the position of football and basketball coach at Nurnberg American High School in Nurnberg, Germany. The majority of Cletus’s teaching and coaching years were spent in Nurnberg. He consistently turned out winning football and basketball teams. He was recognized throughout the European DoDDS system as one of the most successful and longest running high school coaches. In his later coaching years at Nurnberg, Cletus started the girls basketball program and coached many successful girls teams. While teaching and coaching, Cletus managed to earn his Master's and Rank 1 status in Education. Cletus also had teaching assignments in Misawa, Japan and Hahn, Germany before retiring from the DoDDS System in 1991. Cletus relocated to South Milwaukee Wisconsin where he continued as a substitute teacher until retiring for good. His last home was in Muskego, Wisconsin. Cletus loved to travel and took advantage of the overseas opportunity to see Europe and Asia. While living and raising a family in Nurnberg, many summers were spent camping and exploring Europe. There are so many cherished family memories that came from those trips. While in Nurnberg and Hahn, he also loved to participate in the
“Volks Marches”, or walks through the countryside of up to 20 kilometers. During his retirement years he loved riding his bike, walking around the neighborhood, spending time at his lake house in Burnett County Wisconsin, and, most importantly, spending time with family.
Cletus was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cecelia (Fitzgerald). He was a wonderful dad to Kevin (Cynthia), Colleen (Rick) Raupp, Catherine (Jim) Landowski, Carin (Jerry) Voors, Christa (Peter) Kallio and Cecelia (Thom) Kunstek. He was an
awesome Opa to Kyle and Brady Campbell, Kelsie (Hunter) Lilly; David, Gregory (Sophie), Colin (Jessie) and Julia Raupp; Steven Landowski; Dan (Leah) Voors, Theresa (Luke) Eskau, Nick Voors and Sarah (Tony) Lau; Kristin (Danny) Semrad, Karl,
Kasey and Kelby Kallio; Cayla (Mitchell) Masarik, Connor, Carter, Cole and Caden Kunstek. Cletus loved being a Great Opa to Liana, Emma, Aubrey, Caleb, Hannah, Tucker, Reagan, Dylan, and Beatrice. Cletus was a dear brother to Patrick (the late Martha) and MaryJo Koshak. He was a dear brother-in-law to Patricia (the late Bud) Wold and Barbara (the late Mike) Carey.
Cletus was preceded in death by his sister Roseann, brothers Sylvester (the late Betty) and Jacob (Beryl) Campbell, sister-in-law Peggy (the late Jim) Moen and brother-in-law John (the late Jackie) Fitzgerald. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. Many thanks to our beloved family caregivers, Candis and Annie, to the Aurora Hospice Team and to the staff at the Elizabeth Residence in New Berlin for their loving care for Cletus.
Visitation Thursday, December 8, 2022 from 4-6:30 PM at MAX A. SASS & SONS Westwood Chapel in Muskego (W173 S7629 Westwood Dr.). Visitation will continue Friday, December 9, 2022, from 8:30-9:45 AM at ST. LEONARD CATHOLIC CHURCH in Muskego (W173 S7743 Westwood Dr.) with Funeral Mass at 10 AM. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery-Waukesha.
