His parents Clarence and Anna then moved to Galena, Illinois where he lived until age 18 when he enlisted into the military. He served as a Corporal in the Army Air Force from 1943-1946 and went to Weather School at Berkley, California. He met the love of his life Margie (nee Madson), in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin while working as a tree pruner. They married in 1950 in Milwaukee, while attending Marquette University. He moved back to Milwaukee to spend retirement close to his family. Charlie possessed a "green thumb" and loved planting flowers and trees. He enjoyed playing golf, cards and watching the Bears.
