ARTHUR JULIUS BEUTLER Arthur (Art) Julius Beutler, Jr. passed away on October 30, 2021 at the age of 97. He was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin to Arthur Julius Beutler, Sr. and Augusta Dobe Beutler on September 2, 1924. Art was a graduate of La Crosse High School and held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. At the age of eighteen, Art was inducted into the Army where he served in World War II for almost three years. During this time, he was selected to participate in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) which had the primary goal of meeting wartime demands for soldiers with technical skills. During the early part of his military service, Art was sent to various colleges to study engineering. When ASTP was disbanded, Art was sent to Fort Leonard Wood to become part of the Combat Engineers. Later in the war, he was sent to the Army Signal Corp School and then to Hawaii where he maintained the communication systems for the island of Oahu. After completing his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Art went to work for General Electric where he participated in several training programs and worked in various engineering positions. After sixteen years with General Electric, Art became Chief Engineer for Dings Magnetic Separator Company where he worked for three years. Art then became a consultant to, and later an employee of Gettys Manufacturing Company. As a consultant to Gettys, he designed a new servo motor used on machine tools which quickly captured a large percent of the world market. Art worked for Gettys for twenty years during which he was Vice President of Manufacturing, Vice President of International Operations, and Vice President of Technical Planning. He was instrumental in helping the company grow from twenty to five hundred employees. During these years, Art was very active in the IEEE Magnetics Society and SME Robotics International. An inventor at heart, Art was awarded many patents throughout his professional career. He was an entrepreneur who was involved in several business startups. Art had extensive knowledge in the design of high-voltage equipment. After forming his own company, he developed and built equipment that automated the “seasoning” process for x-ray tubes. He also designed and built specialized high-voltage transformers. Art was devoted to his family and cherished spending time with them during holidays and family reunions. His kindness and generosity were appreciated by all. Art was preceded in death by his parents (Arthur and Augusta), his sister Elizabeth, and his brothers Theodore and Robert. Art is survived by his wife of 68 years Carolee Crawford Beutler, daughter Karen D’Ambrisi (Jim), grandsons Jeffrey (Catalina) and David, and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later time in La Crosse, Wisconsin for family. If desired, please make a contribution to a charity of your choice in Art’s honor.
