Andrew Lee Modder, known to all as Lee, passed away peacefully from natural causes on June 28, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born on February 11, 1941, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Marion and Andrew Modder. He was a loving companion to his devoted sweetheart Evonne Carr. His siblings were Susan Modder, David Modder, the late William Modder and his sister-in-law, Pat Modder. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathy Ratzburg, and his parents.
Lee was a proud graduate of Carthage College in Kenosha where he earned a Master's degree in English Literature. This foundation fueled his career as an English teacher at UW-Milwaukee and his lyrical achievement as both a writer and songwriter.
It was music that truly ignited Lee's soul. As 'Mud River Lee', he played his guitar at various venues from Milwaukee's former Blue River Cafe to the 19th St. Coffee House to Summerfest. His engaging storytelling and his performances earned him a loyal following. Over the years, he enjoyed leading several bands. Lee also served on the board of the 19th St. Coffee House.
Lee's love of nature was deeply rooted in his childhood memories of the family cabin in Upper Michigan. It was hand-built by his parents, and he and his brother Bill contributed to its construction. It was here that his love for fishing and canoeing began, hobbies that he enjoyed throughout his life. Lee and Evonne also shared many canoeing adventures in Wisconsin. He was also an avid bird watcher, cardinals being his favorite.
Lee was a member of the Friends Meetinghouse, Milwaukee Quakers. He found solace and fellowship in its welcoming community. His love for nature was also reflected in his gardening pursuits. For many years, he cultivated one in the community garden on the grounds of the Meetinghouse.
His family, friends, and those he touched with his music will remember Lee Modder for his ‘big heart.’ His light will shine on.
